Katherine “Katie” Smith is an Ohio native and was born and raised in Auburn, Ohio. Katie began studying clarinet and piano at age 11 and later studied with former Aurora School of Music teacher Jenny Magistrelli. Katie is a graduate of Kenston Schools and an alumni of the Aurora School of Music. Katie went on to study Clarinet Performance at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music where she studied with Ronald Aufmann and Christopher Pell, both of the Cincinnati Symphony. During her time in Cincinnati, Katie was an avid performer in local ensembles as well as a group and private clarinet lessons instructor at MyCincinnati after-school orchestra program for four years. Katie is currently pursuing a Master of Music degree at the Cleveland Institute of Music where she studies with Afendi Yusuf, Principal Clarinetist of The Cleveland Orchestra, and Robert Woolfrey, Second Clarinetist of The Cleveland Orchestra. Katie regularly performs with the Firelands Symphony Orchestra, The Snowbelt Symphony, and The Cleveland Orchestra Festival Band at Blossom.

Katie is a member of International Women’s Music Fraternity, Sigma Alpha Iota, and has received numerous awards including the Ruby Sword of Honor for excellence in music and service. She is a passionate chamber musician, and her reed trio has performed around Cleveland including classes for the Imani Winds Woodwind Quintet. Katie has several years of teaching experience, both private and at local music stores in NE Ohio, teaching clarinet to students of all ages. Outside of music, Katie loves to ride horses and is a regular volunteer at Fieldstone Farm Therapeutic Riding Center where she teaches and assists classes in horseback riding for people with disabilities.
