Master Class with Clarinetist Daniel Gilbert
Tuesday, April 27, 2010 – Aurora School of Music

International clarinetist, Dan Gilbert shares a whole day on Tuesday, April 27, at the Aurora School of Music. Dan Gilbert has conducted Master classes and clinics all over the world and has joined the Cleveland Orchestra for over twelve years of his life. He was our Guest Artist for the Artist-in-Residence Certificate Program at the Aurora School of Music that day. Morning til afternoon with Daniel Gilbert was unforgettable for all.
Clarinet faculty, Jenny Hublin, selected her top eight students to participate in this program. Ms. Jenny has been teaching at the school for over five years with a reputation of her students playing in the Cleveland Woodwind Symphony, the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra (COYO) and the Akron Youth Symphony (AYS) on a regular basis.
The individual evaluation and mini-clinics began at 9:00 am. Each student had the privilege to play a piece of their choice before Mr. Gilbert who gave them instant feedback and a session of “trial and error” flavored with lots of encouragement. By the end of the evaluation portion of the day at 11:30 am, Mr. Gilbert was very impressed with the caliber of the students he heard. Mr. Gilbert appreciated each student’s solid preparation not only in their solo work, but in their chamber music as well whether with piano (played by Ms. Vera) or with other clarinetist in ensemble settings.

The public Master Class and Performance began at 12:30 pm. Unlike our typical ASM master classes where the Guest Artist would select two or three student to teach, Mr. Gilbert decided to coach all clarinet students, whether individually or as part of a group. All kinds of secrets were revealed from performance skills to practicing tips. One could feel that such an exciting opportunity of learning from a world-class and internationally acclaimed clarinetist was once in a life time. Some of us would lose sleep over the overwhelming inspiration of the day.
An electrifying performance ( video available here) by Dan Gilbert, Jenny Hublin, and Vera Holczer ended the day after which students, teachers and the audience all had a chance to enjoy Dan Gilbert’s personal insights to playing with the Cleveland Orchestra and his current life as a musician, husband and a father of his six and ten year old girls.
“I have so much respect for what’s going on at the Aurora School of Music which is this powerhouse of an institution, I’m very impressed. I didn’t know much about it before today in fact, and what used to be a doctor’s office is now this thriving musical Mecca in Aurora.”-said, Daniel Gilbert, Clarinetist.
